Obituary of Robert "Bob" A. Young
Robert Allan “Bob” Young, 88, lifetime resident of Norwood, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2019. Known as Bob to family and friends, he was the only child of Harold and Helen Young. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years—Ann David Young and their son, Richard Scott Young. Born and raised in Norwood, Bob graduated from Norwood High School in 1948 and attended New Hampton Prep and Colby Jr. College before graduating from Boston University with a BA degree in Business. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War, with one year on board the destroyer USS James C. Owens. Bob was based the balance of his service in Guantanamo, Cuba where he played on both the base basketball and baseball teams while working as a teletype operator and a postal technician. Bob met Ann, a native of Reading MA, on Cape Cod during the summer they were both nineteen and on college break. Bob was working as a Whiting Brothers milkman and Ann was a waitress at the Middleton Inn in Harwich. In 1953, the couple exchanged wedding vows while he was still on active duty in the Navy and she was pursuing her dietetics career in New York City. After his discharge from the Navy, Bob completed his college degree in Business at Boston University while working at the Norwood A&P supermarket and becoming a father with the birth of his son Richie and first daughter Jeannette. Upon graduation, he began a long career in the insurance industry culminating with over twenty years as office manager at Barry Farrell Insurance Agency in Needham, MA. The happy Young family grew when Bob and Ann also became the proud parents to daughters Suzanne and Deanna. Bob varsity lettered all three years in high school in baseball, basketball and football and continued his participation in sports throughout the years staying active in several bowling leagues where he also served as treasurer. He enjoyed many years of playing tennis with the Norwood Tennis Association and several other tennis groups. He also volunteered as an umpire for the Norwood Little league. Bob enjoyed watching sports of all sorts and had an encyclopedic knowledge of names and stats. Bob was a true family man, devoted to his wife and children and taking care of his widowed mother for many years after the death of his father. He was a very loving and warm father who was very supportive of his three daughters, their husbands and their children. Together with Ann, and sometimes accompanied by friends, such as the Nixons, he also enjoyed traveling. They especially loved their Tauck Tours to Canada and to the Southwest as well as their trip to Great Britain. Bob is survived by his three children Jeannette Le Chevallier (Joseph), Suzanne Hazel (Scott) and Deanna Belanger (Mark); his grandchildren Michael Le Chevallier, Vanessa Le Chevallier, and Barrett Belanger. Like Ann, Bob touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Though our hearts are sad, we are comforted knowing that Bob is together again with Ann their son Richie and their other loved ones who have preceded them. The family would like to express our appreciation for the care and comfort provided to both Bob and Ann by Sunrise Senior Living of Norwood as well as by Compassionate Care Hospice, Ideal Health Care and Comforcare Home Health. Relatives and friends are invited to gather for a Funeral Service on Wednesday, May 8th at 11AM in the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street (Rte. 1A), Norwood. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 7th from 4-8PM.
