Mary Susan George, 82, passed away in the comfort of her home on August 30, 2019. Born on January 29, 1937 in Quincy, Massachusetts, Mary grew up as one of six children of the late Henry H. Hughes and Susan Carney Hughes. She met her husband in 1956 at a bowling banquet sponsored by Boston Gear Works, where she was employed. She attended this event with a co-worker who turned out to be the sister of her future husband. She was happily married for 62 years. She was a devoted mother to 6 children whom she raised with strong values, independence, and a compassionate heart. Mary had a passion for reading, cooking, sewing, and crocheting. It was tradition for her to crochet a blanket for every great grandchild. She is lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend of 62 years, Robert Whitney George; her devoted children, Debbie May (Ed Sherk) of Elgin, IL; Susan George of Claremont, NH; Irene Baker (Tim) of Aurora, IL; Maureen Cesari (Joe) of Raleigh, NC; Harold George (Brenda Zollitsch) of Portland, ME; her adoring 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; her loving siblings: William Hughes (the late Barbara) of Weymouth, MA; Irene Hughes of Quincy, MA; Ann MacKinnon (Jack) of Quincy, MA; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her son: R. Michael George, and her siblings: Henry Hughes, Jr. and Patricia Hughes. Family will receive friends on Thursday, September 5th from 12 noon – 1:00 pm at the St. Mary of the Angels Chapel at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Community in Raleigh, with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 1:00 pm. On Tuesday, September 10th, family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:30 am at Dennis Sweeney on Elm Funeral Home in Quincy, MA, with a Funeral Service to begin at 11:30 am at the funeral home. Committal Services will follow at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Guide Dogs for the Blind, guidedogs.com. Robert and Mary worked with this organization to raise their own guide dog. Roger, who has become Robert’s most faithful companion. Mary George’s family asks that you spend time with your family, take a walk on the beach with your loved ones, and make a toast to enduring friendships lifelong and beyond. That is what Mary would wish for you.
