Darlene Amott

Our dear aunt, Darlene Amott, 89, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2019. She was born April 12, 1930 to Charles Ralph Amott and Edith Lyall Eddington. Her growing up years were spent in the mid-west; Indianapolis, Chicago, and Cleveland. These years were filled with many good times with her three big brothers. She especially enjoyed time spent with her brother, Donn. She always enjoyed sports and participated in horseback riding, gymnastics, swimming, ice skating, and skiing, especially on her own street when it became covered in snow and ice. During her senior year in high school in Cleveland, her father passed away. After her graduation, the family moved back to Salt Lake City where she attended the University of Utah, graduating in Physical Education. She worked summers at a summer camp and enjoyed it so much that she went to work for the Girl Scouts of America in Des Moines, Iowa. After two years there she took a position in California for two more years. Her duties included training, purchasing, and the construction and development of new camp sites. She then returned to the University of Utah and completed a master’s degree in physical education. After graduation, she took a job at Springville High School as a Physical Education and Algebra teacher. She thought she would stay until something better came along but ended up staying for 30 years! After a few years, she went back to school and did additional courses to become a high school counselor; a position she enjoyed for many years. She was responsible for P.E., Algebra, Driver’s Ed, Pep Club, counseling, graduations, scholarships, and college admissions. She lived an active life after retirement. She served a mission to Eugene, Oregon, pursued her hobby of astronomy, and was an avid “birder”. She would set aside menial tasks to go watch and count birds. She enjoyed volunteering at the Monte L Bean museum at BYU, taking religion classes, and working on Family History, which she felt called to do. She also enjoyed music and was a member of the Madson Memorial Chorus in Provo, Utah. After gaining her testimony while working in Iowa, she never faltered in her faith and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as Relief Society President and Gospel Doctrine teacher, which she loved. She served for 9 ½ years as the Stake Young Women’s President and was involved in locating and purchasing the girls’ camp in the Manti-La Sal mountains. She worked for many years teaching and helping people with family history. She loved her church service and the new and different experiences she had. Darlene loved people and had many friends. She especially enjoyed her family and we loved all the wonderful time we had with her, especially our annual July 4th celebration at her home in Provo, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers; Calvin Charles (Beth Orem) Richard Wesley (Donna Nye), and Donn R (Barbara Brewster); nephews, Ralph Amott and Mark Amott; and a niece, Kathy Amott Anderson. She is survived by 13 nieces and nephews and their spouses as well as many great-nieces and nephews, who all love her very much. A special thank you to those who helped take care of her in her final year. All her friends at Abbington Assisted Living Center, Stone Henge, and The Beehive Home. We, as a family, appreciate your tender and loving care for our beloved aunt. A viewing will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at 7-9 PM at Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E 800 N, Orem, Utah. The funeral will be Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 12:00 with a viewing from 11:00-11:45 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints church on 667 N 600 E, Provo, Utah. Internment will be in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Millcreek.
