Su Kyong Kim

Su Kyong Kim Su Kyong Kim passed away peacefully in the evening of July 9, 2019, at her home in San Marcos, with her children at her bedside. Su was born in Korea, one of seven children, and grew up during the Japanese occupation of Korea. She attended Seoul National University, and, after graduating, met her future husband Hyong Chun Kim. Soon after their initial meeting, Hyong moved to the United States, but they wrote to each other, and their relationship deepened until, eventually, they decided to marry. Su took a leap of faith, leaving her familiar home in Korea for a new life, new language, and new culture in Eugene, Oregon. Soon after they started a family, and they moved to the Washington, DC area, where Hyong worked for the IMF. When Hyong went on missions for the IMF, Su cared for Ami and Gene, and, in 1972, the family moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. Su took the move in stride, quickly adjusting to learning a new language, navigating a new culture, and acquiring serious bargaining skills at local markets. Su’s warmth and ease with new people helped the family form deep friendships in Jakarta. In Indonesia and after returning to the US, Su learned to play golf, and she won many trophies - and many new friends - in local amateur leagues. Su's short game was so good that she hit several holes-in-one over the years. When Hyong retired, they moved to San Diego to enjoy the weather and year-round golfing. They also joined Palomar Korean Church, one of the earliest families to join the church, and they gained many dear friends there. When Hyong became afflicted with dementia, Su was his primary caregiver, working nearly around the clock to support him and ensure his well being. Su was a supportive wife to Hyong and an ambitious mother to Ami and Gene, always encouraging them to strive for success. She adored her five grandchildren and dreamed big dreams for them. She was fierce, courageous, warm-hearted, opinionated, and stubborn, and she will be missed by her family and her many friends. She is survived by her daughter Ami (husband Robert Carll), son Eugene (wife Michelle), and grandchildren Jesse, Lucy, Eli, Katie, and Tommy.
