Obituary of George Peter Cunningham
George Peter Cunningham, surrounded by his loving family, Mary, Robyn, Eryn and Reegin, passed away peacefully at the age of 67 on the morning of Tuesday April 23rd, 2019, at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Born in Glasgow Scotland, to parents Margaret McMaster and Hector Cunningham, George was one of four children, along with siblings Frances, Linda and Jack. George was an adventurous spirit and travelled as a volunteer microbiologist to Sierra Leone, in West Africa where he set up laboratory services and met the love of his life, Mary Scholten. George immigrated to Canada in 1980 where he and Mary wed and settled in Owen Sound, Ontario to start their family. Over the years, George and Mary, with their three children in tow, continued their adventures by moving across the country, living in Omemee, Peterborough, Lakefield, Sudbury and Regina before finally settling in South Surrey in 1999; when housing prices were so reasonable! George worked for many years in the health care industry for MDS, where he became the Vice President of Western Canada before taking an early retirement. This was short-lived, as he was quickly headhunted and hired on by CML Health Care as their Western Regional Manager. George was never one to sit still, was an active member of multiple boards and was never one to say no to a variety of charitable causes. George loved music and dancing, spending time in Zihuatenjo, Mexico and travelling the world, which often included visiting family and friends overseas. However, nothing compared to his love of family time, including special traditions, delicious brunches and evenings filled with live theatre and entertainment. Many will always remember George for his amazing sense of humour and infectious laughter that could carry through a building and brighten anyone’s day. George is deeply missed and will be forever remembered by his beloved wife of 38 years, Mary Cunningham, his beautiful daughters Robyn Claassen and Eryn Jackson, his endearing son Reegin Cunningham, as well as their supportive partners Eric, Kyle, and Cristina, his mini-me grandsons Logan and Lucas, and his favourite pooch, Snowball and the family’s newest canine member, Patchi. Please join us on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at Good Shepherd Church (2250 150 Street, Surrey, BC) to celebrate George’s life. Visitation will begin at 10am with the Funeral Mass to begin at 11am and a reception to follow until 2pm. George lived life to the fullest, enjoying every moment with flare, so we would love if you dressed to celebrate his vibrant soul!
