Ruth Frances Pickles Sydney We, the family of Ruth Frances Pickles, sadly announce her passing on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at the Northside General Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Barbara Ellen Leonard and the last surviving member of her family having been predeceased by sister Elizabeth Flynn and brothers Edward, James and Joseph. Ruth was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish where she was the Akela for the cub pack for several years. She also enjoyed her time spent volunteering at the Time Out program at First United Church. Ruth was a very strong person who enjoyed skating, skiing, yoga, camping at Ingonish and walking Dominion beach. She was an avid golfer and especially proud of being a member of the ‘Hole In One’ group at Lingan Golf Club. She was a wonderful homemaker, excelling at knitting, sewing, gardening and flaky pie crusts. Ruth ventured outside her home to work at General Instruments, the Cape Breton Hospital and Woolco. She is survived by Walter, her loving husband for 71 years. Also surviving are daughters Sandra (David) Gabriel, Sydney; Beverlee (Gordon) Stermann, Canmore Alta.; and Nancy (Paul) Heighton, New Glasgow. Ruth was the cherished grandmother of Geoffrey, Ruth (Adam) Shore and Emily Gabriel; Jennifer (Dino) Senn and Lindsey (Blake) Robson, Laura, David and Colin Heighton.
