Obituary of Dr. Man Pang Lau
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Man Pang Lau (M.B.B.S., M.D., F.R.C.P.(C), F.R.C.(Psych)) on January 3, 2019 at the age of 84. He is remembered by his wife of 48 years, Christine, his daughter Suzanne (Daniel Sawyer) and granddaughters (Naomi, Esther, Bethany). Man Pang is survived by his brother Man Chung (Kit Ling), sisters Man Yee, Man Chiu and Alison Man Chun (Kelvin Chan), nephews James Lau and Kendrick Chan and nieces Serene Lau and Karen Chan. He was predeceased by his brother Man Hap and brothers-in-law Chi Nin Chan and Wilkin Cheung. Man Pang practiced psychiatry in various locations in Hong Kong, British Columbia, and Ontario. He was among the first to employ computers in the field of Addictions research, having been sent by the Hong Kong University to the WHO in Kentucky in the 1950s to learn the technique. He held many positions, including the acting head of the Institute for Addictions Research Foundation of Ontario, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and Associate Professor at Western University (formerly the University of Western Ontario). He took great pride in serving and treating his patients with skill and compassion for nearly 5 decades, and published a plethora of academic papers, book chapters and articles of interest. He had many other esoteric interests, including addictions medicine, trans-cultural psychiatry, philosophy and theology. The family wishes to thank the medical staff and teams at St. John’s Rehabilitation, Pine Villa, Scarborough Hospital (Grace Division), Sunnybrook Hospital and the CVICU (especially Dr. Samantha Liauw, Chaplain Christian O’Brien and Juliet the Nurse Coordinator of D3) for their excellent care. A funeral service will be held at Jerett Funeral Homes – North York Chapel (6191 Yonge Street) on January 12, 2019 at 10:30 AM, with internment to follow at York Cemetery (133 Beecroft Road). In lieu of flowers, donations made in Memory of Dr. Man Pang Lau to Sunnybrook Hospital are preferred.
