Obituary of David Wing-Chuen Pi
Dr. David Wing-Chuen Pi peacefully passed away on April 30, 2019 in Vancouver, Canada. He was born on June 06, 1955 in Hong Kong and was one of five children. He will be remembered with love by his wife, Amanda; daughter, Susan; son, Steven; sisters, Rosaline and Mabel; and brother, Paul. David graduated from medical school at University of Hong Kong in 1980. He was certified as a hematopathologist in 1988 and went on to become the medical director at the Canadian Red Cross. In 2003, he joined St. Paul’s Hospital, forming the Provincial Blood Coordinating Office where he identified gaps in transfusion medicine which became the core of his medical practice and life’s work. He went on to work at Vancouver General Hospital with a focus on blood inventory management where he led many successful projects in driving through health system changes in the clinical laboratory and blood supply service sectors. David's research has been published by various scientific journals throughout his career. In 2018, while still fighting cancer, David was proud to have his final paper published by the International Society of Blood Transfusion Science Series. UBC’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine awarded him the 2017 David Hardwick Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine awarded him the 2019 Ortho Award for his significant contributions to transfusion medicine. Please join us in celebrating David's life on Saturday May 04, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at Lord’s Love Church, Lower Hall, 645 East 47th Avenue, Vancouver, BC.
