Obituary of Robert "Bob" A. Carter
Robert "Bob" Adair Carter passed away in Vancouver, WA on April 28, 2019. Daughter Carol Welch, son-in-law Curt Welch, son Robert Carter, granddaughters Shelly Carter-Peck and Ashley Helderman were at his side. Bob was born in Seaside, Oregon on December 8, 1928 to John and Katherine Carter. He lived in Seaside with his parents and brothers Jack and Perry until 1934 when they all moved to Portland. During his Summers while a student at Benson High School he worked at Olds and King department store, later known as the Galleria, in downtown Portland. He attended Vanport Extension Center, now known as Portland State University, for one year. He then attended University of Oregon for 1 1/2 years before enlisting in the US Army. He did his basic training at Fort Lewis, WA, then was stationed at the Hanford Atomic Plant, and then served in Korea in the Korean War. He rose to the rank of Sergeant, earning a Korean Service Medal w/1 Bronze Star, a United Nations Service Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge. Upon his return to Portland in 1953 he began working at Nabisco. He loved his job and retired after 34 years as a Production Foreman. His kids loved the Nabisco goodies he often brought home! Shortly after his retirement from Nabisco, he worked as a Property Manager for over 25 years for C & R Realty in Portland, OR. As Manager he took great pride in improving and beautifying the property and creating an atmosphere of community for his tenants. Bob enjoyed taking Amtrak to Seattle, gardening, spending time with his family and his cats. He loved living in Portland, making friends wherever he went. Be that on Amtrak or on the MAX Light Rail, while shopping or simply riding up the elevator with you. He always had a positive attitude and a generous spirit. Bob is survived by his daughter Carol and son-in-law Curt Welch, grandchildren Keith Welch and wife Lindsey Gummersall, grandchildren Scott Welch and Rachael Welch; daughter Kathy Kantonen; son Robert Carter and daughter-in-law Tina Carter; granddaughter Shelly Carter-Peck, husband Jeremiah Peck, great-grandchildren Elisha and Alison Peck; granddaughter Kelsey Carter; granddaughter Ashley Helderman and husband Dustin Helderman, great-granddaughter Madelyn Ann Helderman and granddaughter Hailey Gooch. Bob was preceded in death by both his parents, John and Katherine Carter, stepmother Frances Carter, brothers Jack Carter and Perry Carter, and former wife and friend Jo Ann Monk. Robert will be inurned at Willamette National Cemetery.
