Obituary of Catherine Mary Nash
In Loving Memory of Catherine Mary NASH. Kay was born Catherine Mary Bartleman in Winnipeg and passed away December 14, 2018 in Vernon, British Columbia at the age of 98. Her father was a factor for the Hudson’s Bay Company stationed at remote trading posts in northern Manitoba and Alberta. Kay started travelling early. Her first job was in a bank in Edmonton. She got 3 weeks if she took vacation in winter, or 2 weeks if she took vacation in summer. So she took winter vacations to the British Columbia Coast. In 1948, she graduated as a registered nurse in Victoria, British Columbia and was Valedictorian for her graduating class. She worked in several locations during her career. She nursed in Seattle; taught nursing and worked as a ward supervisor in Honolulu; worked as an assistant Director of Nursing in the university hospital in Saskatoon; went to Bristol, England to take midwife training and rode a bicycle to see patients as in the show ‘Call the Midwife’. Kay moved to Vernon in 1969 to take the position as Director of Nursing at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. In 1972 she married Thomas Raymond Nash of Vernon. She retired from VJH in 1973 and worked part time for 2 years travelling around B.C. doing hospital accreditations. She and Tom spent the next 2 decades travelling around B.C. in summer and to the Palm Springs area in winters. After Tom died in 1995, she continued to travel. Her last big trip was an around the world tour when she was 96 years old. ‘Bart’ as she was known by the Nash family, will be fondly remembered by stepsons David (Jacquie), Tom (Lynne) and Rick (Lois); granddaughters Sheanne (Layton) Ralston and Teri (Mitch); great grandchildren Levi, Lacey, Taylor and Dallas and great-great grandson Parker. From the Bartleman family, she is survived by nieces Susan Ulmer, Sandra Aitken, Catherine Clark, and nephews Bill Bartleman and Grant & John Aitken plus numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. According to Kay’s wishes, she was cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.
