Obituary of William James McMahon
William James (Jim) McMahon passed away June 2, 2019, just a month short of his 90th birthday. Jim was born in 1929 at Harrington, Quebec to Elizabeth and Thomas McMahon, the third of six children. He apprenticed as an electrician after high school, joining his father’s crew with Gatineau Power. In 1951, Jim met Nancy Douglas, a school teacher at nearby Arundel. A year later, they were married in St. Barnabas Anglican Church, St. Lambert, Quebec. Jim was a very kind, gentle, and helpful man. In 1956, Jim earned a Life Saving Medal for resuscitating a colleague who was electrocuted. After visiting BC’s beautiful Okanagan Valley, Jim joined BC Hydro, where he worked his way up to Superintendent of the Construction Department. Jim and Nancy spent many wonderful years travelling the world, following his retirement in 1988. Jim’s passions included camping, fishing, curling, gardening, cross-country skiing, music, and dancing. Jim was an avid volunteer in the early days of the Sovereign Lake ski area, clearing trails and helping with World Cup races. Jim curled for decades with the BC Hydro group, and volunteered with the Masters World Curling Championship held in Vernon. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, their children: Cathie, Richard, Brian, and John, eight grandchildren and, to date, four great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, July 22 at 11:00 am at All Saints Anglican Church, 3205 – 27th Street, Vernon. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charitable organization of your choice.
