Obituary of Janey Mcdonald
Janey McDonald passed away on January 3, 2019, at Victoria, BC. The only daughter of a pioneer family, Janey was born in Souris, Manitoba, on March 30, 1913. She had many wonderful memories of growing up in Souris where she attended elementary and secondary school. In 1932, she graduated from Normal School in Winnipeg and then began her teaching career in Benito, Manitoba. She continued her career in Swan River and was, for many years, a highly respected teacher in the Lord Selkirk School Division. In 1939, Janey married Robert Lloyd (Frenchy) McDonald and in 1940 they moved to Selkirk where they raised their family and were active participants in the community. During those years, Janey completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Winnipeg and became highly fluent in French, one of her proudest achievements. This led to her positions as the Head of the French Department at the Selkirk Collegiate and French Consultant for the Lord Selkirk School Division. A scholarship in her name continues to be awarded by the Lord Selkirk High School. Although a lover of travel and a great reader, most of all, Janey was always a sportswoman. She was an accomplished curler but found greatest joy in tennis, which she continued to play until she was 88. After retirement, Janey and Frenchy spent many happy winters in Yuma, Arizona, where she played tennis and made wonderful friends in the community. In 1978 they moved from Selkirk to Winnipeg, where she enjoyed participating in the activities of the Kildonan and Taylor Tennis Clubs. In 1996 they moved from Winnipeg to Victoria, BC. Janey was predeceased by her husband Frenchy, her daughter Lynn Pipes and her son-in-law Bob Ferguson. She is survived by her daughter Myrna Ferguson (Bruce), her son-in-law Michael Pipes (Bonnie), seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of life will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 3787 Cedar Hill Rd, Victoria, BC on January 21, 2019 at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Luther Court Society www. luthercourt.org.
