Mr. Parzival Copes

Parzival Copes, Phd, OC – Born 01-22-1924 Parzival Copes passed away peacefully at Broadmead Veteran's Health Center in Victoria on September 8, 2017. He was predeceased by brother Jan and sister Betsy and by his loving wife of 62 years, Dinie. He is survived by his brother Art, his three sons and their wives and his six grandchildren: Raymond Copes of Victoria, his wife Marilyn and their sons Christopher, Kevin and Colin; Michael Copes of Comox, his wife Patti and their daughter Tarynn; and Terrence Copes, his wife Suzanne and their children Alyssa and Nicholas. Parzi, as he was known to his friends and colleagues, lived a long a productive life. Born in Nakusp, BC, he moved with his family to Vancouver and then, at the age of nine, to Amsterdam. In his youth he lived through the Nazi occupation of Holland, where he made connection with the Dutch Resistance. He was imprisoned in a forced labour camp until the liberation of Eastern Holland by the advancing Canadian Army, which he was able to join in the field as an Interpreter. He returned to Canada in 1946 as a student in Political Science and Economics at U.B.C. and completed his Doctorate at the London School of Economics. He served as Head of the department of Economics at Memorial University of Newfoundland and as founding Head of the department of Economics and Commerce at S.F.U., where he was later involved in the foundation of the Center for Canadian Studies and the Institute of Fisheries Analysis. Acknowledged as a leading expert in the field of Fisheries Economics, he was sought after as a consultant to many national, provincial and state governments as well as international organizations. His long and prolific work in his chosen field garnered him much recognition and numerous awards across Canada and internationally. Some of these include: - the Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy – 1994 - Distinquished Service Award – Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade – 1996 - Honorary degrees: University of Tromso (1993); Royal Roads University (2011); Memorial University of Newfoundland (2014) - Order of Canada -2005 - Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal -2013 Parzi will be deeply missed by his family and the many others who knew him. Thanks go out to the staff of the Broadmead Veteran's Health Center who cared for Parzi in his final days.
