Born in Ottawa on Jan 4th, 1925 at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, she was the only child of Leda and Harry Broadbent. Her father (better known as “Punch”) played professional hockey for many years, most notably for Ottawa Senators from 1918 to 1924 and was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962. Sally grew up in Ottawa South and attended Glebe Collegiate where she stood out as an excellent athlete and she maintained her competitive spirit throughout her lifetime. She went on to graduate from the Ottawa Civic Hospital Nursing Program in 1948. Sally married Bob Avery (also of Ottawa) in 1949. They lived in Ottawa, Vancouver and Lethbridge (during which time they had 4 children (John, Scott, Laurie and Allison) and then returned to Ottawa in 1967. They were active in all aspects of the dog world including the breeding and showing of Cairn and Norwich Terriers. Sally and Bob were named lifelong members of both the Rideau Terrier Club and the Ottawa Kennel Club. They moved to Ten Mile Point in Victoria in 1979 and joined the Victoria City Kennel Club. Bob passed away in 1989 and Sally remained in Victoria where she continued to enjoy the West Coast lifestyle staying active with her many hobbies which, in addition to the kennel club, included the Vancouver Island Dog Judges Study Group, golfing at Henderson and morning coffee with the girls. Sally also loved travelling and had great memories of several cruises and the wonderful experiences she had on her “bucket list” African safari. Sally was an avid reader and she also loved playing bridge, hosting tables at home and playing with the bridge group at Goward House in Cadboro Bay. Sally was also recently honoured for her 50 years of dedicated service to the Canadian Kennel Club. Sally will be sadly missed by her 4 children, her granddaughter Lauren, her nieces and nephews and her many friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
