Obituary of Jorge Luis Bastanzuri
Jorge Luis Bastanzuri (96) passed away in West Palm Beach, Fl on June 9, 2019. He was born in Guipuzcua, Matanzas, Cuba. He is survived by Mercedes Delgado, his second wife of 30 years. Jorge was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, his grandson, Jorge E Bastanzuri Jr. and his first wife of 35 years, Margarita Larrauri, the mother of his surviving children, Margarita (Carlos) de Rojas, Jorge E. (Karen) Bastanzuri. Jorge is also survived by his stepson Rene (Jacqueline) Delgado, his grandchildren, Christine (Jamie) Vignone, Jacklyn (Sean) Moller, Chelsey (Josh) Torrens and Daniel Delgado, five great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Adela Campos, and brother-in-law Lorenzo (Mayda) Campos. A favorite Uncle, he also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews of the Delgado-Campos Family, the Larrauri Family and specially Blanca Bastanzuri (Ralph Loring), Liana B. Barker and Martin (Pat) Bastanzuri. In 1961 he placed his two small children on a “Peter Pan” flight so that they could escape the Castro regime, reuniting with them in 1962. Finding work constructing the Florida Sugar Refinery, the family moved first to Belle Glade, FL and in later year to West Palm Beach, FL. Jorge remained working as a supervisor with the Florida Sugar Refinery until his retirement. A devout Catholic, Jorge was a member of St. Juliana Catholic Church for more than 30 years. There he served as Head Usher and Eucharist Minister of the Spanish Mass. For most of those years, he was also involved in many church activities and organizations such as La Cofradia de la Caridad, El Grupo de Oracion Alabare, and the radio program El Mensaje. Losing his first wife’s to cancer, he made it his mission to volunteer his time to the yearly La Liga Contra el Cancer Telemarathon (League Against Cancer Telethon). Always proud to be a Cuban, Jorge belonged to the Pro Cuba Association, where he last served as vice treasurer. He was an inspiration not only to his family but to his many lifelong friends. Once you met him, you never forgot him. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends at Quattlebaum Funeral, Cremation and Event Center, 6411 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach on Thursday, June 13th from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. with Prayer Service between 8:00 P.M and 9:00 P.M. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Juliana Catholic Church, 4500 S Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach, FL on Friday, June 14th at 1:00 P.M. Interment will follow at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery, 10941 Southern Blvd, Royal Palm Beach, FL.
