Terrance Scherback

My dad succumbed to ALS on May 30, 2019 at the age of 69. I invite you to celebrate the life of my father, Terry Scherback, on Saturday, July 20, 2019. Visiting will begin at 11am at the Walter D. Kelly Life Celebration Centre with the service to follow at noon. The service will be followed by a gathering over food and drink at 1pm at The Grand Cantina (1000 Drouillard Road). Although my dad focused a long and rewarding HR career at Ford and Nemak, his passion was teaching... whether it was how to throw a hard and fast and accurate baseball from shortstop position; how to properly quaff a Château Latour Pauillac; how to prepare the coals to grill perfect racks of lamb; why Jimmy Page’s guitar on ‘Good Times Bad Times’ are the finest first guitar chords on the best inaugural rock album that totally blew his mind back in ‘69 in his university residence and why you should think that too; how to mix an unparalleled gin martini; the importance of sitting around a table as a family or with friends eating and drinking and telling stories; why reading is a fundamental act for a healthy and just world; why a meal is not complete without dessert; what gymnastics and mastering the pommel horse teaches young men about life; why Davy Crockett is a hero; how to cook the perfect hot dog on a stick over a campfire and why that should matter to you; the influential role and responsibility of a grandparent; the philosophy of a garden, the philosophy of engineering, the philosophy of family. The way my dad led his life resulted in many long-standing and meaningful friendships with wonderful people from Windsor, the Sault, and beyond. Considering who my father was and what mattered to him, you can imagine why ALS was such a cruel and devastating diagnosis for my father to receive, and why it is a blessing that he did not suffer extensively. My dad was predeceased by my mom, Lesley Scherback (Dunn); his parents, Jo and Bill Scherback; and his parents in law, Mona and Glenn Dunn. He will be missed by his sister and brother in law, Donna and Tim Sanderson, and his ‘outlaws’, Christine and Frank Paci, Terri Dunn and Jean Belair, Rae and Ted Olive, Steve Dunn and Catrina van Nostrand, and Jeff and Liz Dunn. Dad will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins. And he will be missed by me and my husband, Michael, and his two grandsons, Jack and Max, more than I can articulate right now in words. I would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Shoesmith, Denise Martins, and the entire ALS Clinic Team at University Hospital in London, and also to Sharon Colman from the ALS Society of Windsor-Essex County. You are true angels on this earth. A special thanks to Dr. Pizzuti for his compassionate care over the last several years. And, finally, a heartfelt thank you to Mel Figar for his friendship and support of my dad, especially in this last week. Long live my dad’s teachings, forever in us all. – Andrea Brown
