Obituary of Mr. John Kenneth Hansell
With sadness, we announce the passing of Ken Hansell on June 29, 2019 at the age of 104. Dad was born at 523 Banning St. He will be missed and remembered by his daughter Donna Brigham; grandchildren Ian Brigham (Joanne); and great grandchildren Julia and Lauren, all in Winninipeg; granddaughter Dawn Brigham of Yellowknife and son Garry Hansell of Maryland, U.S.A.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine in 2010, his son-in-law Frank Brigham in 2000 and by his four brothers and one sister and several nephews. Dad’s father died in his thirties when Dad was two years of age, leaving his mother to raise six children on her own. Life was tough for all of them with many hardships. Dad joined the Winnipeg Police Dept. in 1936. He served in the Air Force during WWII. Upon return from the war he completely remodeled his mother’s home for her. He married Catherine MacKenzie in August 1944. In 1954 he built the family home at 499 Burell Street. A home we were all very proud of and he remained there until he was almost 102 years old. In 1957 he built the family cottage at Lee River. Till this day the cottage has been precious to all of us and will always remain in the family. Dad retired in 1969 with the rank of Desk Sargent and Mom and Dad enjoyed 40 summers at the cottage with their family. These were the best years of their lives. Mom and Dad were very involved with their grandchildren of whom they were very proud. Dad was a hard worker his entire life, a wonderful provider and always willing to help everyone. He always had candies or cookies for everyone he came in contact with. His sweet tooth kept Mom baking nearly every day. Dad spent the last 2 and half years of his life on T6 of Deer Lodge Center where he attended as many activities as he could and the family wishes to thank all the staff for his exemplary care. We also wish to thank the many visitors, especially Dieter Peshken who visited every Saturday and they had tea and cookies. Also, Joe Gallagher who was a dedicated visitor. A celebration of Dad’s Life will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Thomson ‘In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, with reception to follow. “I Love You Too Dad” Rest In Peace
