Obituary of John Paul

IN THE CARE OF

Thomson Funeral Home

After a brief illness, John passed away on September 10, 2018 at Parkview Personal Care Home. John grew up in Trinidad and Tobago and like many of his generation sought out greater opportunities by moving abroad. After graduating from high school, John spent several years as a teacher to save money to further his education. He studied first at Howard University in Washington, DC. Seeking new adventures, John moved to Winnipeg in 1963 first to study at the University of Manitoba before earning his BA in political science and statistics from the University of Winnipeg. During his university years, John relished the chance to explore Canada while working on the trains. After graduation John pursued a career in insurance. He obtained his CLU designation and worked for many years with national and local firms until his retirement. John often expressed his love and appreciation for his life in Winnipeg while remaining proud of his Trinidadian roots. John was community minded and a mainstay of all the events that filled the West Indian community's social calendar. John loved challenging his friends at word games and arguing about the daily headlines - always firm in his belief that he who spoke loudest won the debate. John also loved sports, completing two marathons and still playing tennis regularly into his 80s. John was predeceased by his parents, Emmanuel and Ezra Paul, sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Jeffrey Rocheford, brothers, Marcellus and Charles and a twin brother in infancy. He is survived by his children: Naomi and Nathan; daughter-in-law Genevieve; sister and brother-in-law Norma and Renwick Young; brother and sister-in-law William and Vitalis Paul; sister-in-law Constance, four nephews and one niece, his lifelong friend Yvonne and former wife Linda. John's family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at Concordia Hospital for the care he received. Funeral services will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. An interment will take place at St. Vital Cemetery one hour prior at 9:30 am to the service.
