Obituary of Sheila Ivy Joyce Green
It is with deep sadness that we share the loss of our Mom, Grandma and Grandie, as she went to her heavenly home on November 29th, lovingly mom was not alone. Her long, fulfilling life full of joie de vivre is an inspiration to us her family. We love her and will miss her always. Mom was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Wilson Green, daughter Heather and son Michael. She is survived by her children Derrick, Veronica (Kirk Creed), Lawrence (Colleen), Pamela (Ken Doleman) and Holly; along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren, those being: Heathers family; Brian and Noella Rudge, their sons Julian and Jared, Kyle and Marilyn Rudge and their children Kianna and Ender Veronica’s family; Alex Haynen and Olivia Griffith. Michaels family; daughter in law Debbie Green, Sarah (Green) and John Douglas, their children Grace Ivy and Owen, Dustin Green and Eco Lawrence’s family; Ryan Green and his son Jonathon, Shawn Green and Amanda their son Trayjin, Kelley Green and Darryl Irvine Pamela’s family; Adam and Bryanna Doleman their sons Aidan and Elijah, Shannon (Doleman) and David Ketel their children Micah Gail and Noah, Joshua Doleman, Heather (Doleman) and Ruben Jimenez-Perez. Sheila was born in London, England to Cornelius and Edith (Hart) Desmond - the youngest sister to Doris, Bill, Stan, and Helen. In 1946 Mom met our Dad, Kenneth W. Green in London, who had been serving as a lieutenant in the Canadian Navy. It was love at first sight and Mom was prepared to move ½ way around the world to build a life together. So they married on March 22, 1947 and later that year sailed for Canada, and Dad’s hometown of Winnipeg. Early residents of Charleswood, together they built a home at 283 Mc Lean St., and filled it over the next 13 years with their family of 7 children. Mom was a wonderful homemaker and so many of our fondest memories center around the dinner table, Christmas time, summer vacation, and Sunny Harbour. No surprise then that she always made room in our home and a place at the table for old friends, children of old friends, their children and those whom we her children brought home. She was a dedicated mother and ran a tight ship (Dad’s naval influence?) when it came to our home. Mom loved music, ranging from her favourite opera La Boheme, to Nelson Eddy and Jennette Mcdonald. She had a passion for Scrabble, spending countless hours with her friends Ruth and Peg; and later on, with family - kids and grandkids alike, whoever she could enlist to play. On almost equal footing for many years was Bingo – a good night out of fun and excitement, especially if she or a friend got a sweat (one letter away from winning during the game). When Dad passed on May 23, 1982 Mom’s immense sadness took her back to England. Here she reunited with her childhood friend Tony. Over the course of 10 years they enjoyed traveling, gardening (yellow and white daffodils were favourites), their fishpond, and the simple pleasures of a retired and senior life. After Tony passed, Mom returned home once again to Charleswood. She returned not only to her children and spouses, but to a multitude of grandchildren and old friends ready to greet her and love her. The next years brought the joys and sadness, happiness and heartache that life shares with all. The joys of weddings, anniversaries, graduations, and the arrival of great grandchildren. And the heartache of loss - the passing of our dear brother Michael, and our beloved sister Heather. Mom also lost her dear friend Ruth within a few years of coming home, something she never quite got over. As English as a cup of tea, Mom enjoyed Red Rose (of course) and a cigarette, all the way through her life. So it was a big day when she became a proud Canadian Citizen 7 years ago. During the citizenship ceremony, the Judge bestowed the honor of allowing her to read a poem she had written – born of her experiences, travels and abiding love of this great land, into the Official Record. Yes, mom was a poet at heart and could recite Rudyard Kipling’s poem “IF” with only the least amount of prompting. These last years were filled with travels within Canada, visiting her children and grandchildren. She did her utmost to host as many family suppers as possible. Mom was great at hospitality, had some secret recipes and was renowned for her roast beef suppers with roast potatoes, cooked cabbage and many extras. She always enjoyed lively conversations, sometimes a little one sided. Mom never shied away from talking about her faith in God and His Son, her Saviour Jesus Christ. Her faith grew in her last years and she began to look forward to her reuniting with her husband Ken. Michael and Heather were always on her heart and believing in the grace and mercy of God, had an assurance she would be with them again. Mom also came to embrace her maternal Jewish roots, taking interest in the significance in this fact and its legacy. We will miss those suppers, games, conversations and laughs. We will miss her feistiness and zest for life. We will simply miss our Mom. The funeral for mom will be on Thursday, December 6 at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Boulevard at Haney Street, a reception will follow immediately.
