Beverly E. Smith

Beverly E. Riddett Smith of Yonkers, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 surrounded by her loving family which was her greatest joy. She was 90. Beverly was born in West New York, NJ on December 4, 1927 to Agnes and Ernest Gladstone Riddett and resided in Yonkers her whole life. She attended Gorton High School and was in the last class of World War II Cadet Nursing Corps graduates from the Cochran School of Nursing in 1948. She graduated from Iona College in 1986 with a BA degree in counseling. Beverly married Cornelius on September 1, 1951, at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers. They raised their daughters on Chase Avenue in Yonkers. She worked as a nurse and nursing supervisor at St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers for over 40 years. Beverly was a lover of all animals, especially birds, and volunteered at the Audubon Society and Lenoir Preserve. The Beverly E. Smith Butterfly Garden was dedicated to her at Lenoir Preserve. She had many hobbies including fishing, gardening and bird watching. She was active in Christ the King parish and started the Teenage Federation to actively engage the young people in the community. She will be missed and remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She is survived by her husband, Cornelius, their three daughters, Jacqueline McMahon, Bernadette Wade and Elizabeth Harrington, seven grandchildren, Christopher McMahon, Kevin McMahon, Meghan McMahon, Erin Wade, Lauren Wade, Dylan Harrington and Taylor Harrington, one great-grandchild Connor McMahon, son-in-laws Steve Wade and Jamie Harrington, and daughter-in-law Jessica McMahon and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers Albert Riddett and Roland Riddett. Visitation will be Friday, June 1, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave, Yonkers, NY 10703. A Funeral Mass will be Held on Saturday, June 2 at 9:30 a.m. at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, 110 Shonnard Place Yonkers, NY 10703.
