Harry Lee Kay, Jr. aged 90, and a resident of Alexandria, Virginia, died on Saturday, November 24, 2017, at the Capital Caring Hospice in Arlington, Virginia. Harry was born on March 10, 1927 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and grew up on a farm in Woodford, Virginia. His parents were Harry Lee Kay, Sr., and Mary Wright Kay, and he had two sisters, Evelyn Thornton, of Richmond, Virginia, and Mary Elizabeth Amonette, of Radford, Virginia, both of whom predeceased Harry. He was married to Mildred Rogers Kay, who died in August 2015, for 60 years. Surviving family include daughter Milla Hulda Kay, and her husband, Tryggvi Eiriksson, Bryan Kay, and his wife, Janet Bates Kay, daughter, Pat Edens, and her husband James German, and daughter, Susan Kay. Harry served in the U.S. Army, attending advanced Army training at the University of Pennsylvania, Clemson University, and the Virginia Military Institute, before finishing his tour of service in Europe. After leaving the military he completed his civil engineering degree at the University of Virginia, and worked for John McShain, Inc., a Philadelphia-based construction company, as part of the team conducting the remodeling and expansion of the State Department. Harry subsequently moved to the Federal Government, working for both the Veterans Administration and the General Services Administration, where he managed construction projects for a broad range of government buildings, including VA hospitals, the Kennedy Center, and federal courthouses across the Midwest. He received numerous awards for excellence in project management, suggested process improvements, and for exercising consistently high ethical standards in helping to resolve the challenges that arose around each building project. Harry was a long-time resident of Alexandria, Virginia, and, for nearly 60 years, a faithful member and leader at Arlington Baptist Church, in Arlington Virginia. Harry taught, served as a deacon, served as head of the Finance Committee, served as head of the Building Committee, served as a member of several pastor search committees, and was an usher. The visitation is from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., eastern, on Sunday, December 10, 2017, at the Demaine Funeral Home, in Springfield, Virginia. The funeral service will follow, on Monday, December 11, 2017, beginning at 11:00 a.m., eastern, at Arlington Baptist Church, in Arlington, Virginia. Pastor Mike Law will conduct the service. Burial will follow at National Memorial Park, in Falls Church, Virginia.
