JOAN M. HORSTMAN, 89, of Adams Heritage, in Monroeville, passed away in her sleep early Monday, April 30, 2018. Born March 10, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Emma (Lais) Bell. Despite the hardships forced upon Joan's childhood by the Great Depression, she graduated top of her class at Leeds High School in 1947. On Feb. 14, 1953, Joan married James R. Palmer, an Air Guardsman at Baer Field, and raised two children, Deborah and James F. After her husband's unexpected death in 1967, Joan raised her children on her own until marrying Gilbert Horstman in 1972. Her outgoing personality acquired many lifelong friends, many of whom she met through Sacred Heart Catholic Church, bus trips and selling Avon. Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Baker; brother, Fred (Marilyn) Bell; four grandchildren, Daniel (Allison) Baker, Brian (Kirsten) Baker, Diana Baker, and Brenda (Jeremiah) Lenegar; five great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her son in 1978; and second husband in 2000. Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Thursday May 3, 2018, at St. Henry's Catholic Church, 2929 E. Paulding Road, with visitation one hour prior. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to PSC Partners Seeking a Cure or the Alpha-1 Foundation.
