Obituary of Dorothy Elizabeth Hall
Dorothy Elizabeth Hall, 94, passed away after a long journey through dementia on Saturday, July 13, 2019 with family by her side. She was born in Stephensport, Kentucky on October 2, 1924 to Walter and Maude May Smith and lived in Kentucky and Indiana all of her life until moving to Fresno, CA when her health declined. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Delbert Hall; her daughters JoAnn Marie Druin and Carol Sue Knaebel Stewart; three grandchildren, Mitchell Goebel, Kristie Liane Druin-Martin and Robert “Robbie” Knaebel; and her partner Ezra Griswold. Dorothy attended a one-room schoolhouse through middle school then married young and became a mother to two girls. For decades, she worked as a restaurant server then in customer service for fabric stores and dollar stores; she also decorated cakes professionally. Until age 88, she still worked and mowed her 5 acres of grass; she didn’t want to quit either one. She drove a red Mustang until age 92 and did not relinquish that voluntarily. She had beautiful skin and soft blue eyes and never looked her age or weight. She loved animals and taught others to love and respect them; all her pets lived 12-15 years. She loved country music and enjoyed line dancing at Princeton SWIRCA. She wanted to be independent, always pay her own way and never lean on anyone. Dorothy was a creative cake and textile artist. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren will always remember the countless pieces of clothing she sewed for them and the personalized birthday cakes she decorated every year. They felt a unique love from her that comforted them in troubling times. Survivors include her nephew, Charles Stilwell; her grandchildren, Matthew Goebel, Peggy Macmillan and husband Patrick, Greg Goebel, Kelly Satterwhite and husband Gene; her great grandchildren, Aaron and Megan Goebel, Alisha Warren and husband David, Josh Burns, Emma Macmillan and partner Matt Rosfelder, Katherine Macmillan and partner Michael Burgos, Gus Satterwhite and wife Megan, Angela Colt, and Matthew Knaebel; her great great grandchildren Killian and Minnie Warren and Tanner Kerr. The family extends their deepest thanks to her family physician Larry Lutz, Deaconess Hospital and St. Vincent in Evansville as well as The Vineyards Memory Care and Optimal Hospice in Fresno, CA. We are forever grateful for the support she received in her early years of dementia from customer service agents and staff, especially the state police. Burial will be provided by Alexander Funeral Home. Visitation will take place Friday July 26 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and again Saturday, July 27 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 27 at 2:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Home – North Chapel with burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Vanderburgh Humane Society, 400 Millner Industrial Drive, Evansville IN 47710.
