Rudolf Max Planert

Rudolf M. Planert, aged 88, died July 18 at Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, Virginia. Mr. Planert was born in Berlin, Germany and became a naturalized citizen in 1960. From 1957-1959 he served in the U.S. Army in the 3rd Infantry Division in Aschaffenburg, Germany. He later served as an officer in the Judge Advocate General Corps at the Pentagon, rising to the rank of Captain. Upon completing his military service in 1963, Mr. Planert spent his career as an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service Office of Chief Counsel in Washington D.C. He retired in 1997. Mr. Planert was a long-time resident of Arlington County, Virginia. He was a graduate of Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he met his wife of sixty-five years, Ingrid Planert, née Scharenberg, who preceded him in death in March of this year. Mr. Planert earned his law degree at the University of Michigan Law School. He is remembered by his friends and family for his sense of humor and his love of history, and for his devotion to his wife and children. Survivors include his son Will Planert (Jennifer) of Fairfax, Virginia, daughter Debra Miller (Don) of Denver, Colorado, daughter Caroline Barber (Kevin) of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
