Jef Bolin Monday was born in South Charleston, West Virginia, in February of 1955.
A teenager when the 1960’s turned tumultuously into the 70’s, Jef fell into place with the burgeoning
counterculture movement. He told stories of burning draft cards and walking barefoot, and in a
flourish of his individuality, he started signing his name with one f instead of his given two.
He was raised in the 60’s and 70’s rock and worshiped the Beatles, inspiring his lifelong habit of
wearing iconic circular “John Lennon” wireframe glasses. \
He met Carolyn Connor in 1974. Their courting was quick, just months. They moved to Tucker County, West Virginia, where Carolyn started her career as a school teacher and Jef ran a pub in the Appalachian mountains where people would come to ski.
Children came four years later, and Jef continued on with his worklife, the gift of which allowed Carolyn to stay home with their young kids for most of their early years. And Jef valued hard work; he took pride in it. One of his first and most iconic jobs was as a coal miner in West Virginia. He went on to work manual and technical jobs for the rest of his career.
Many of those years were in the oil fields as a Wireline Engineer, when his family lived in
Meadville, Pennsylvania, and then ultimately working for 16 years as a HVAC Technician at
Reagan National Airport in Washington DC, where his family lives in Stafford, Virginia.
Outside of work hours, Jef fortified his identity as a helpful handyman, a fervent Pittsburgh Steelers fan,
a Harley Davidson enthusiast, and a dabbling woodworker. To the end he took pride in the value
of hard work, in the experience of the working class, and in his spouse, Carolyn Connor Monday—a veteran elementary school Reading Specialist—and his kids who also survive him:
Mollie Erin Langer (California), Megan Corinne Monday (Wisconsin), Mackenzie Connor
Monday (Virginia), and Zachary Scott Monday (California).
Jef is also survived by 4 grandchildren: Finnegan Monday smith (Megan), Ava, Patrick, and
Charlotte Langer (Mollie), and by his brothers Kim Monday (Janet) and Mike Monday (Melinda),
and his cousin, Sunny Given.
He is preceded by his parents: Sunny Garthin Bolin and Carlos Alva Monday, and Sunny’s second husband, Albert Lee Young.
