IN THE CARE OF

Murphy Funeral Homes

Joyce Scordy, 86 of Leesburg, Virginia went to be with her Lord on October 20, 2020. Joyce was born on October 8, 1934 in Washington, DC and grew up and created her life in the DC Metropolitan area. She attended George Washington University on a full 4-year scholarship where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity and the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She worked for the Department of Interior until she took some time to raise her family. She returned to work for the Federal Government until her retirement from the Department of Interior at USGS in Reston, VA. She then became a Mother’s Day Out teacher at Pender United Methodist Church’s Penderhill Preschool. There she touched the lives of many children and made close friendships with the families. When her Granddaughter was born, she became her best day care. This was a blessing to her family. She taught Sunday School at the various churches she belonged to throughout her life. She volunteered a lot of her time with Prison Fellowship and Sanctity of Life Ministries. She has volunteered as a bereavement counselor with Hospice. Joyce was steadfast in her faith and believed that death is the greatest gift of grace that God gives to people who believe in him. Joyce is survived by her son, David Scordy and his wife Eileen; her daughter Catherine Salter and her husband Curtis and her granddaughter Kristen Salter. She is also survived by other family and friends that she loved and cared for deeply. A private interment will be held for the immediate family. At a future date, we will gather for a Celebration of Life so we can share our stories of a life that touched so many. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Samaritan’s Purse or to the American Bible Society.
