He was the son of Mr. Neil F. Law Jr. and Lucile Weeks Law. He was born July 20, 1937 and was a lifelong resident of Brooksville being the sixth generation of a family with roots woven deeply into the fabric of Hernando County. Peter W. Law (1802-1850) was one of the only five landowners in 1845. Many held public office. His great-grand father, William Law, was Sheriff of Hernando County in the 1820’s and Neil F. Law Sr. was Sheriff from 1933-1948.
Fred Law was a 1955 graduate of Hernando High School where he was an outstanding athlete playing on the football team as running back from 1951-1955, the HHS team won the local conferences for years (1952-1955) under Coach Tom Varn. After graduating from HHS, Law attended St. Petersburg Jr. College graduating in 1959. He went on to the University of Florida majoring in Agriculture (citrus and soil) and graduated in 1964. In 1965, Law started working with VA-Carlonia as a salesman for one year in the field of citrus production. In 1966, Law started his career with the USDA-Soil Conservation Service as Soil Conservationist and later District Conservationist in Mayo, Perry, Monticello and Marianna (1966-1994).
Law retired from the USDA on April 1, 1994 and came back home to Brooksville where he took care of his aging parents on the farm at Croom Road until their death (Lucile W. Law 2001 and Neil F. Law Jr. 2008).
Law has always been a life member of the First Baptist Church of Brooksville and was ordained as an active deacon in 1997. Law was stationed on the USS Lexington (CVS-64) during the Cuban Crisis (1962-1964) in service as a court recorder in the legal office.
Law is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Suellen P. Law. He is survived by many cousins of the Law and Weeks family: John W. Fuller, Alexandria, VA, Gary Weeks, Brooksville, FL, Jimmy Cook, West Palm Beach, FL, and Jo Carol Law Durham, Highlands, NC.
A Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00-7:00pm, Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville Chapel. Funeral Services will take place at 11:00am, Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at First Baptist Church of Brooksville, with Pastor Scott Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Brooksville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Brooksville, Building Fund.
