Mr. Lloyd F Miller
December 31, 1922 – August 1, 2018

Lloyd F. Miller, 95, died on August 1, 2018. He was an adored father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and
brother in law. Lloyd was born December 31, 1922 to Robert W. Miller, Sr. and Ruth B. Miller in
Charlottesville, Virginia.
Mr. Miller was educated in Charlottesville local schools and graduated from the University of Virginia
with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering. While an undergrad, he was a member of the Trigon
Society, Alpha Chi Sigma and Tau Beta Pi.
After graduating from U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School at the Naval Academy, he was
commissioned as Ensign. He received training at Radar Schools at Harvard and MIT. He was also a
graduate of the USN submarine school. He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS
Blueback in the Pacific Fleet from 1945-1946. He continued to serve in the Navy Reserve until 1982
when he retired as Commander with 40 years of service.
He was employed by Eastman Kodak from 1946 until 1983 as a development engineer, in customer
relations, waste control, quality control, computer design and management. He retired as Director of
Corporate Systems Development & Service.
After retirement, he returned to Charlottesville in 1983 where he and his wife were active members of
Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry for 8 years. He was also active in Region 15 of
the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia which involved the establishment of the Schoolhouse Thrift Shop,
where he served as treasurer in its early years.
He enjoyed the athletics at the University of Virginia and played golf regularly at Birdwood and the
Waynesboro Country Club. With his wife Ruth, he enjoyed annual winter trips to Florida and
summer vacations to North Carolina and Virginia beaches.
His last 10 years were spent living at the Colonnades Retirement Community where he greatly enjoyed
his fellow retirees and the bridge playing.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth E. Miller and his younger brothers, Robert W.
Miller, Jr. of Charlottesville and F. Eugene Miller of Fayetteville, North Carolina.
To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving children Donald F. Miller of Cerillos, New Mexico and
Constance M. Dovel and her husband Thomas of Charlottesville, VA. He also leaves his
grandchildren Fawn Turner and her husband Phil (New Mexico), Cassandra M., Nicholas R. and his
wife Kendall, and Elizabeth A. Dovel, (Charlottesville), three great grandchildren (Maura, Annie, and
Liam Turner), a very special sister in law Connie Gail Miller, four adored nieces Laura Burns, Patricia
Reardon, Gina Guilliams, and Rhonda Miller, a much loved cousin Dorothy Thomas, his favorite
“nephew,” John Mahone, and a host of friends too numerous to mention.
A celebration of life and remembrance will be held graveside at Monticello Memorial Gardens on
Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
A special thanks to the staff at the Colonnades for their loving care and attention and to the many
Colonnades’ friends that enriched his life beyond measure. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
can be made to the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation (CACF), the Salvation Army,
Hospice of the Piedmont, or Meals on Wheels.
