Al J. Scheller, 86, of Elizabethtown, died May 29, 2018 at Silver Oaks Health Campus. Al was born September 18, 1931 in Jennings County, the son of Frederick B. and Mary L. (McQuaid) Scheller. He graduated from North Vernon High School and attended Purdue University. He is a veteran of the US Air Force having served as a Radar Mechanic Crew Chief during the Koran Conflict. Mr. Scheller retired from Cummins Engine Co. in 1991 as a design engineer. After his retirement he continued working as a consultant for Cummins Military Systems, Meadows Metal Products and Cummins Engine Co. Al also worked at Horizon Outlet, Divers-A-Cadd, Touchdown Manufacturing and Knauf Fiberglass. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour, where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the 12 Gallon Blood Donor Club of the American Red Cross, Society of Automotive Engineers, Prairie Promenaders Square Dance Club, and the Indiana Farm Bureau. Al was also a former coach for men’s softball with Columbus Park and Rec. He was an avid flower and vegetable gardener and enjoyed landscape design. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harold and Paul Scheller; and sister, Martha Singer. Survivors include his loving wife, Ginny, whom he married on June 25, 1955; his daughters, Cathy (Pete) Schneider of Batesville and Patty Scheller of Indianapolis; brother, Ralph Scheller of Indianapolis; sisters, Ruth Diekhoff of Westport, and Edna Parris of Cocoa Beach, FL; grandchildren, Mary (Eli) Buchanan of Batesville, Amanda (Jeremy) Price of Chesterfield, MO, Peter J. (Lisa) Schneider of Batesville, and Andrew (Amanda) Schneider of Batesville; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Kayla, Connor, Carson, Ethan, Logan, Anna, and Aubree. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour, with Fr. Daniel Staublin as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Ambrose Catholic Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 -8 p.m. Monday, June 4 at Myers-Reed Chapel, Columbus.
