IN THE CARE OF
Hathaway-Myers Chapel
Karen Ann Harman, 64, died on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Our Hospice in Columbus, Indiana. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family and friends carried her through a grueling sickness. Yet, throughout her own struggle, she reached out to others in need through prayer, homemade cards, phone calls, and donations.
Karen was born on July 27, 1953 to Duane and Marlyn (Hurst) Lemmons. She was raised in Rush and Shelby Counties. She was the oldest of her siblings, Gary (Diana) Lemmons of Shelbyville, Gregg (Melody) Lemmons of Manila, and Dan (Pam) Lemmons of Waldron.
After graduating from Waldron High School and attending Ball State University, she met Joseph Harman, her husband of 44 years. With determination, she managed to work full time while raising a family and attending college to finish and further her degree through the University of Indianapolis. Her husband, Joe, daughter, Erika (Travis) East of Columbus, son, Grant Harman of Carmel, and grandchildren, Owen, Ella, and Anna East remember her as a woman with a servant’s heart who loved them with her entire being. She is survived by her father, husband, siblings, children and grandchildren.
Known for her dedication to patient care, Karen worked at Columbus Regional Hospital for 43 years. Most of those years were spent as a surgical nurse in the operating room, but she spent the last 3.5 years as the supervisor of the Central Processing Department. Patient care drove her every decision in all facets of her career. Caring for others went hand in hand with Karen’s passion for promoting Christ through serving in church, participating in mission work, and loving her family with her grandchildren at the forefront of that love.
A memorial service for Karen will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Ogilville Christian Church at 5 pm. Friends may call from 1 pm to 5 pm on Saturday prior to service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ogilville Christian Church Missions, Columbus Regional Hospital Foundation for the Surgery Department, or the ALS foundation. Karen tried to live by the Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. In effect, do a loving act of kindness, make someone laugh, send a card, give a hug, or say “I love you” to your special friend in her memory.
