Obituary of Charles C. Adkins
Charles C. Adkins, 95, of Connersville, died Saturday morning, February 2, 2013, at Heritage House of Connersville. Charles was a native of Pikeville, Kentucky, born November 26, 1916 to Hiram and Jane Gilispie Adkins. He was injured while deployed as a field lineman during WW II with the U.S. Army 303rd Infantry Regiment serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. On September 4, 1942, he was married to the former June A. Hammon who died February 1, 2008. Charles had been employed at Stant Manufacturing and worked for several years for Wayne Clark at Clark’s Flowers. In 1978, he retired from Design and Manufacturing. Charles had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1951 where he had served in many capacities, including deacon and trustee. He spent his life witnessing to others and sharing his faith. He was an ordained minister and in 1975 organized the local nursing home and jail ministries that continue today. Charles is survived by his daughter: Bonnie Gillispie of Milton; six grandchildren: Becky Hymer, Mike Meyer, David Meyer, Sarah Russell, Stacy Faw, Tracy Faw; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife of 66 years, he was preceded in death by two daughters: Beverly Ann Adkins and Barbara Jean Meyer; six brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville, with Pastor Kim McHale of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Valley Grove Cemetery, Wayne County, with military honors provide by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Friends may visit at the funeral home from 3 p.m. Wednesday until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Journey of Faith at Calvary Baptist Church.
