Obituary of James Douglas "Jim" Swan Jr.
James D. “Jim” Swan, Jr., passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at his residence. Born June 18, 1932, to Douglas Swan and Thelda Rosson Swan. He is survived by his second wife, Barbara Noren Eggborn Swan; his sons, Steve Swan (wife Karla) and David Swan; Barbara’s son John Noren; his grandchildren, Whitney, Bailey, Ross, Abby (Steve’s children), Alex Noren (John’s son) and two great granddaughters. In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his beloved and devoted first wife, Janet Bailey Swan. Jim graduated from Culpeper High School and then attended Virginia Tech graduating in 1953 with a degree in agriculture. He spent 4 years in Virginia Tech’s ROTC program. He served 2 years as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He returned to the family farm and the J.A. Swan business in 1955. He was a dynamic member in the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce and the VA Farm Equipment Association. During his time with the VA Farm Equipment Association, he served as Director for 1 term. Jim was named the Jaycee Man of the Year and received the Distinguished Service Award for his tireless efforts to promote the programs of the organization. He was a very successful Culpeper merchant. He owned and managed the J.A. Swan Farm Implement Company for many years. After he sold that business, he began to sell lawn and garden equipment at the current K&M building until 2007 and his son David managed this business. One of Jim’s greatest loves and true passions was Glebe Farm that he increased to over 1700 acres. It was utilized to grow crops and raise cattle. He knew every acre and loved every minute he spent walking and driving through the fields. He has lovingly left this legacy of Glebe Farm to his son Steve and his grandson Ross. Jim loved farming so much that he purchased a ranch in Townsend, MT. He often equated his home in Montana to the Culpeper of 50 years ago. Jim loved and was a faithful supporter of VA Tech. He spoke with great pride about being blessed to have attended 17 VA Tech Bowl games. He gave a scholarship to the athletics department at the school. Jim loved his home of Culpeper and always sought to add to the community. To this end, he established a scholarship at Culpeper Hospital in memory of his first wife Janet. While Jim adored Culpeper, he sought out new places to visit and cultures to learn about. He loved to travel and his favorite places to visit were Denmark, Germany and Montana. Jim was an astute property owner and was always on the lookout for the next piece of land to develop or set aside for increase of the farm. He was always a good and faithful steward of the land. One of Jim’s last wishes was to build a new Swan family museum on his farm in Brandy Station. He maintained one for years on the second floor of the K&M building and his son Steve is currently constructing the new museum at the farm. Jim was loved by so many and could always be counted on for a joke to make someone smile. The celebration of the life of James D.
