Obituary of John Marvin Garr
John Marvin Garr, passed away at UVA Medical Center, Charlottesville, VA, Sunday, February 17, 2013 at the age of 88. Borr February 25, 1924, to John Henry and Mary May Garr in Orange, VA, John married Barbara Lee Vawter in Louisa County August 3, 1962. He was a Sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II, serving on le Shima. Returning to Culpeper, he was employed by the C & P Telephone Company / Bell Atlantic, retiring after 38 years of service; was a member of the Culpeper Host Lions Club for a number of years, served as President for one term; member of the Verizon Telephone Blue Ridge Chapter, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War, serving one term as Commander for VFW Post 2524; was former member of the Germanna Foundation and the Madison County Historical Society. John was chairman of Keep Virginia Beautiful Committee, representing Culpeper when the Town of Culpeper took first place and was named the number one small town in America; served on the Culpeper Town Council for 16 years, serving on various committees, chairman of the finance committee; served as chairman of the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District Commission representing the Town of Culpeper. After his retirement from the telephone company, John did volunteer work at Culpeper Regional Hospital and was a faithful member of the Culpeper Baptist Church. John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Lee Vawter, daughter, Margie Anna Garr, son, Daniel Roberts Garr and Gabrielle DiGiandomenico, all of Culpeper and step-son, Samuel L. Cave, Jr. of Springfield, VA, step-daughter, Dorothy Ann Leon and her husband, John Anthony Leon, Jr. of High Point, NC, granddaughter, Hayley Nicole Garr of Culpeper, step-grandchildren; Jonathan Patrick Mitchell of Herndon, VA, Samara Suzanne Collins and her husband Kyle Collins of Charlotte, NC, Molly Janan Corvin and her husband Andrew of Roanoke, VA, Julianne Bree Leon of Greensboro, NC, Andrew Bryan Leon of Shelby, NC, siblings; Kenneth Ray Garr of Culpeper, Mary Jean Craye of Fredericksburg, Homer Grey Garr of Chester and Jesse James Garr of Richmond. In addition to his parents, his siblings; Elizabeth Breeden, Herbert Hoover Garr and Erma Louise Waugh precede John in death. Graveside services will be held Thursday, February 21, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery, Culpeper, with Pastor David Williamson officiating and military honors provided by VFW Post 2524 and American Legion Post 330 Honor Guards. Following interment, the family will gather back at Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West Street for a time of food and fellowship.
