Obituary of James Lee Chumley, Sr.
James “Jim” Lee Chumley, Sr., 68, of Evansville, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was born September 23, 1944, in Montgomery, AL, to the late Edward G. and Edna B. (McKnight) Chumley. He graduated from Culver, Harper and Bosse. He worked at General Foods for many years and enjoyed being a people greeter at Wal-Mart in later years. He was a US Army Veteran who served in Korea, the Indiana National Guard and Army Reserves. He was raised as a Baptist at Calvary Baptist Church of Evansville and was a member of Nativity Catholic Church. He was also a member of VFW, American Legion and the Men’s Club at Nativity Catholic Church, where he fried fish for the dinners at Lent and fried chicken for the summer socials. He was a sportsman, loved fishing, was an avid NASCAR race fan and enjoyed mini hydroplane racing. Jim was a good natured man with a dry sense of humor and mischievous smile that endeared him to his family and many friends. He will be missed by all. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Judy Chumley; brother, Fred G. Chumley; and sister, Connie Clark. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy J. (Dages) Chumley, whom he married on August 27, 1988; sons, Michael L. Chumley, James L. Chumley, Jr. and Earl J. Chumley; grandchildren; Jessica, Jennifer, Britni, Justin and Raven Chumley; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; brothers, E. Gerald (Barbara) Chumley of Winslow, IN and Curtiss W. Chumley of Columbus, GA; and sister, Gail (Tom) Ingram of Evansville. Services will be 1:00 PM Monday, June 24, 2013, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Fr. Henry Kuykendall, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park at a later date. Friends may visit Sunday from 12:00 to 7:00 PM and Monday from 10:30 AM until service time at the funeral home.
