Obituary of Gordon B. Mason
Gordon Bruno Mason, 98 of Sterling VA, passed away on April 3, 2014. In those 98 years, Gordon experienced so many things that defined the “Greatest Generation.” Born to Italian immigrant parents in western Pennsylvania, he set off on adventures in the Civilian Conservation Corps, got a Masters in Journalism from Ohio State University, served in the Army Intelligence Corps during WWII in the European theater, and was one of the first recruits into the CIA where he had an exciting 30 year career. He received a distinguished service award from George H W Bush and was consulted on several histories related to the Cold War, the Kennedys, and the history of the CIA. He loved reading, fishing, nature, and telling old war stories. Not bad for a poor kid from Cherry Valley, PA. Born on January 20, 1916, his family survived the Great Depression and the hard life of living in a coal mining town. He is the last of five children to pass away and he leaves behind a wife, Jewel Huff Mason, daughter, Laura Parker, son, William G. Mason, four grandchildren, Nelly Swonger, Sally Baghdassarian, Phillip Baghdassarian, Robert Nolan Mason and five great-grandchildren, Melina, Josephine, Laren, Mason, and Liliana. The family will hold a viewing at 10:00 and a memorial service at 11:00 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton and a burial at 2:00 at National Memorial Park Cemetery in Falls Church on Friday, April 11, 2014. For those who wish to participate we are accepting donations for the Wounded Warrior Foundation in lieu of flowers.
