Obituary of Kathy Vollmer Hulvey
Kathy Vollmer Hulvey, 62, of Harrisonburg, VA passed away on Monday, May 28, 2018 at her residence. She was born April 21, 1956 in Baltimore, MD to the late Dr. Fred and Marge Vollmer. Kathy was employed as an MSR at the Dayton office of Shenandoah Valley Electric Co-Op, where working with and helping others brought her great joy. She cherished her SVEC family; and their prayers, love, support and generosity blessed her immensely. She worked previously at The Boys and Girls Club in Harrisonburg, heading the program at Pleasant Valley Elementary, and was the Assistant Director of the Brown Memorial Childcare Program in McGaheysville. Many may remember her welcoming smile from her days at Sky Yogurt. She was a member of the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, where she was a true worshiper, singing with hands raised and praising Jesus. She loved her church which fosters a relationship with Jesus over religion, preaches the Bible as it was written, without compromise, and values holiness, sanctification and the blood of Jesus. Kathy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She valued hard work, and particularly considered it her joyful service to lend a hand cleaning or landscaping. Kathy enjoyed the outdoors, photography, watching baseball and playing tennis. With Doug, she loved collecting heart-shaped shells and rocks and ministering to others in need by giving out olive wood crosses. The simple gift of her company and good conversation will be missed by many. On December 20, 2007, she married Doug Hulvey. Their ten years of marriage were filled with joy, and their love for each other was surpassed only by their love for Jesus. Their joint family consists of Jay Sullenger (Erin) of La Mirada, CA; Ben Sullenger (Brianne) of Madison Heights, VA; Kelly Sullenger of Harrisonburg; Carolina Kornegay (Craig) of Winter Park, CO; and Wind Kornegay (Mercy) of Iwakuni, Japan. She was richly blessed with the wonderful grandchildren: Eli, Hannah, Reagan, Macy, Colson, Camden, Carson, Micha, Forest, Zayla, Leah, and Wyatt. Her siblings consist of Fred Vollmer (Joyce) of Bel Air, MD; Art Vollmer (Julie) of Santa Fe, NM; Bobby Vollmer (Anne) of Timonium, MD; Leo Vollmer (Kris) of Kennedyville, MD; Anne Oropeza (Jim) of Williamsburg, VA; Mary Ciminello (Ed) of San Ramon, CA and Bill Vollmer (Jeanne) of Portland, OR. A service celebrating her life will be held at the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene, 1871 Boyers Road, Harrisonburg, VA, On Thursday June 7, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Kerry Willis and Pastor Roger Dove will officiate. Lindsey Funeral Homes is handling the arrangements. Kathy and Doug were blessed with the opportunity to take two trips together to the Holy Land. They were life changing events that deepened their faith and strengthened their relationship and marriage. On their honeymoon trip, they decided that when their earthly journey ended, they would like their ashes to be combined and scattered there. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to honor Kathy’s life and make this desire a reality, please consider sending a donation to Kelly Sullenger, 288 Emerald Dr., Harrisonburg, VA 22801. God Bless You. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.lindseyharrisonburg.com.
