Alice Maecker Quinlan

Alice M. Quinlan's earthly sojourn concluded, just shy of age 102, Friday, April 13, 2018. She was born Alice Katheryn Maecker May 5, 1916 in Buffalo, New York. She had a twin, Ruth, and was the last of eight children. Always a voracious reader, she excelled in school, learned short hand, and could type over 110 words per minute. After schooling, Alice became a successful Buffalo model and married Edward W. Quinlan, Jr. who joined the Army Air Corps in 1942 and became a flight navigator during the war. They were stationed near White Sands, New Mexico, when unbeknownst to them they experienced the fire and fury of the world’s first atomic bomb. Together they traveled to Japan and Europe where her skills allowed her to be an executive secretary for military leaders. After a stay in Washington D.C., Alice and her now young family were transferred to Hawaii and there they enjoyed three idyllic years. Her husband was then promoted to Colonel and transferred to Ft. Benjamin Harrison where she regularly enjoyed hosting large parties at their 1906 home on Colonel’s Row. Upon retirement, Alice moved nearby to Avalon Hills and continued to entertain and raise her family. Her husband joined People’s Bank in 1969 and served as president from 1976 to 1984. Afterwards they traveled together until Edward died in 1989. Throughout life, Alice continued to learn and became a gourmet cook and talented seamstress. She enjoyed people and was blessed with a sharp mind to the very end of her life. Alice loved people and engaging in conversations, always willing to make new friends. Her longevity was due to good genes, diet, attitude, and her two gifted physicians, Dr. Charles Cornett and Dr. Edward Harlamert, oh and a bit of luck provided by God above. She enjoyed a cocktail but was proud that she had never smoked a cigarette in her life. She will be missed by many, young and old. Alice is survived by her sons, Edward W. Quinlan, III and his wife, Cyndi of Carlsbad, CA and Jack Quinlan and Liz Coram of Indianapolis, IN and grandchildren, Cameryn and Edward, IV ages 19 and 14. Visitation will be Friday, April 20 from 4-8pm at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 E 71st St., Indianapolis, IN and from 10-11am Saturday, April 21 in the Peace Chapel at Crown Hill Cemetery, 700 W 38th St., Indianapolis, IN. Her celebration of life will be held 11 am Saturday, April 21 at the Peace Chapel with burial to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alice’s memory may be made to the Humane Society of Indianapolis as you might believe she loved animals and life itself.
