Gary Scott Coons

Gary Scott Coons, age 46, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Sunday May 13, 2018. Gary was born January 15, 1972 in Beech Grove, Indiana to Linda Coons-Wakefield and Thomas Eugene Coons. Over Gary's life, he was known for his public service not only to the city of Beech Grove but to also all of Indianapolis. Gary was the Chief of Indianapolis Homeland Security but that didn't stop him from being active not only in the community but with his family. Some of his awards included: Beech Grove Hall of Fame, Firefighter of the year 2003, 2014 Mobile Enterprise award, Indy's Best & Brightest in Government 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012, Presidential Homeland Security Advisory Council 2011, FBI Recognition of service for enhancing investigation 2011, ILF Founders award for excellence in community service, Gary's positive outlook on life didn't diminish even after he was diagnosed with his illness. Gary once said "I realized I don't have to doubt how far I can go. I just have to remember how far I have come, everything I've faced, All the battles I've won, and all the fears I've overcome." Gary will leave an indelible mark on everyone's lives he helped through the years and in turn the family requests that donations be made to the fund he started, Firefighters with Parkinson's. Gary is survived by his wife, Patricia Coons; son Brandon Coons; son Blake Coons; and daughter Baylee Coons; mother Linda Coons-Wakefield; brother Thomas Haldon Coons and sister-in-law Sabine Coons; niece Elizabeth Coons, nephew Benjamin Coons and nephew Jonathon Coons. Gary's family would like to make special mention of the McLinn Family, Robert Mathis, and all of the Richmond Hill residents. Gary was preceded in death by; father Thomas Eugene Coons; grandfather Haldon "Tex" Jenkins, and grandmother Anna Lee Jenkins. A visitation for Gary will be held Friday, May 18, 2018 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Little & Sons Funeral Home, 4901 E Stop 11 Road. A funeral service will occur Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Beech Grove High School, 5330 Hornet Ave, Beech Grove, IN. A burial will occur Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Crown Hill Cemetery, 700 W 38th St, Indianapolis, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gary's memory may be made to Firefighters with Parkinson's Disease.
