William C Neubauer

Col. (Ret) William C. Neubauer of Carmel, IN passed away on October 4, 2012 after a well-lived life of 93 years. He was born on July 6, 1919 in Bridgeport CT, the only child of parents, William and Cornelia Neubauer. Bill Neubauer attended Bordentown Military Institute and in 1940, completed his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University. He was a Second Lieutenant on active duty in the US Army Signal Corps at the start of the Second World War. During the conflict, he served in combat and support roles in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. While in Australia, he met and married the late Grace Vivian Neubauer, his beloved wife of 42 years. After the war, Bill attended the Army Command General Staff College and earned a Masters of Business Administration degree from Harvard University. During his Army career, he served in a variety of command assignments in the US, Europe and Asia for which he was awarded the Legion of Merit and numerous citations, commendations and medals. He was a member of the US Armed Forces Joint Chiefs of Staff. Bill retired to northern California after his 26-year military career and worked for 14 additional years in the emerging semiconductor industry that developed into what has become Silicon Valley. Bill is survived by sons, Lt. Col. (ret.) William C. Neubauer, Jr. (Jane) and Blake Lee Neubauer (Carolyn); grandchildren, William C. Neubauer, III (Akino), Emily Lytle-Painter (Scott), Mathew Lytle, Christopher Neubauer, Madeline Lytle and Lydia Neubauer; and great-grandchildren, William C. Neubauer, IV and Kazohiro Neubauer. He was blessed to share the past 24 years with his friend and companion, Deborah Hoffmann, travelling the world to many interesting places. His family and friends remember Bill Neubauer as a kind, outgoing man with a wealth of stories from his many life experiences. While he enjoyed playing golf and traveling, his greatest pleasure was spending time in the company of his family who loved him and of whom he was most proud. His family would like to thank the staffs of HCR Manor Care at Summer Trace and IU Health for their care and attention to Bill’s needs.
