Harry Walter Phelps, 72, of Madison Heights, passed away November 23, 2012. He is survived by his wife, of 46 years, Doris Burge Phelps.
Born March 31, 1940, in Campbell Co., he was a son of the late Charlie and Edith Crist Phelps. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Harry Ray Phelps, and Jerry Tyree; a sister, Doris Tedder; and two brothers, William Palmer, and John Gowens.
Mr. Phelps was retired from BFI Disposal, after 31 years of service, and was a member of Amazing Grace Ministries. He loved tinkering with cars, and was known for how well he kept them.
Survivors also include his children, Ronnie Phelps and wife Niki, of FL, Charles Phelps and wife Becky, of Amherst, Eddie Rose, of Lynchburg, Ricky Phelps, of Thaxton, and Mary Beeson, of Mexico; siblings, Gladys Tyree and husband Bill, of Madison Heights, Ernest Phelps and wife Bessie, of Evington, Joyce Slusser and husband Eddie, of Madison Heights, Cathy Cash and husband Johnny, of Lynchburg, and Becky Leftwich, of Monroe; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to please consider the needs of the family by making contributions to Mrs. Phelps.
The family will receive friends Monday, November 26, 2012, from 6-8:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel, and at other times at the residence.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the funeral home by the Rev. Bill Evans and the Rev. Sidney Wade. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
