Obituary of Viola Rinckwitz Wilbur
WILBUR, Viola Rinckwitz, a longtime resident of Bon Air, died Sunday, May 11, 2014, at her home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. A native of Miami, Fla., Mrs. Wilbur moved with her family to Virginia as a young child. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Josephine Rinckwitz of Richmond. She is survived by her husband of more than 60 years, George W. Wilbur. Mrs. Wilbur was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. She attended Richmond Professional Institute, which subsequently became Virginia Commonwealth University. She was an administrative employee for more than 40 years at the McGuire Veterans’ Hospital in Richmond. Over the years she served as a volunteer in the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church gift shop, served meals to the homeless at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and participated as a volunteer at the St. Paul’s Lenten Luncheons. Near the end of World War II, Mrs. Wilbur was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross. At home, she was an avid cook and gardener. The Wilbur’s Bon Air home, “Hectare,” was the site of numerous garden tours. Mrs. Wilbur shared her husband’s love for travel and together they visited more than 80 countries worldwide. Her remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday (today). Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riverview Cemetery with a memorial service to follow at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home at 12 noon Wednesday.
