Obituary of Robert Lee Piers
Robert Lee Piers, longtime Nashville, Indiana resident passed away July 12, 2018 at the age of 86. Bob was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 3, 1931. He is preceded in death by his father William Francis Piers, an Indianapolis attorney, and Pauline Haas Piers. He attended Howe High School in Indianapolis, graduated from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. During his professional career, he was the Manager of Employment and Training for Cummins Engine Co. in Columbus, Indiana. Later, he went on to co-found Fleming Piers Associates, which became a leading executive search firm for 30 years. The firm later merged with TASA International, Zurich, Switzerland. Bob was active and had leadership roles with Hanover College, Brown County Art Gallery Foundation, Nashville Town Board, Columbus, Indiana Rotary Club, and the Nashville United Methodist Church. Bob and his wife, Joyce, were avid collectors of antiques and Brown County, Indiana art. He thoroughly enjoyed woodworking, carving, and making furniture and became quite accomplished at it. Bob was a proud Hoosier and loved Indiana University Men's Basketball. Above all, he loved his family dearly; his children, grandchildren, and most of all his beloved wife, Joyce. Bob is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Joyce Elaine Keller Piers (born in Kokomo, Indiana), his son Robin Piers (Vicki) of Lafayette, Colorado; daughter Lisa Piers Schmalz (Dr. William J. Schmalz) of Bloomington, Indiana; three grandchildren, Robert Piers of Austin, Texas; William Piers of Lafayette, Colorado, and Audrey Elizabeth Schmalz of Bloomington, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at the Nashville United Methodist Church located at 36 S. Jefferson Street, Nashville, Indiana on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Lunch will be provided at the church following interment. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
