
Francisco was born in Maricao, Puerto Rico on April 23, 1937, to the late Francisco and Dolores (Santiago) Mercado. Francisco was raised in Mayaguez, PR. In the 1950s he made his way to Hoboken, NJ, where he built a life rooted in hard work, laughter, and love. After he married his loving wife, Alejia, he settled in Union City in 1961. Prior to his retirement he worked at Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment. A dedicated worker in everything he did, he was never one to shy away from a challenge and took pride in providing for those he loved.
Francisco had a gift for lighting up every room he entered. His laughter was contagious, his stories unforgettable, and his kindness unmatched. Whether sharing a joke, offering a helping hand, or simply being present, he made everyone around him feel seen and valued.
The beloved husband of the late, Alejia Mercado, Francisco is survived by his children, Frank Mercado and his wife, Ann and Karen Wood and her husband, Edward; his grandchildren, Tyler Wood (Courtney), Justin Mercado, Kaitlyn Wood and Hannah Mercado; his great-grandchildren, Emery and Easton Wood and his siblings, Antonio Mercado (Ana), Ada Vazquez. Along with his parents and wife, Francisco was predeceased by his sister, Lydia Forestier.
