Obituary of William “Willie” Bristol Hood
William “Willie” Bristol Hood joined his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the end of a six-year journey bravely battling the effects of Goodpasture’s Disease. Born to Ned and Logene Hood on December 25, 1949, he grew up in Yadkinville, NC and graduated from Forbush High School, serving as Student Body President and graduating as valedictorian his senior year. He attended NC State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Conservation in 1972 and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Landscape Architecture in 1975. Willie began his career at Jerry Turner & Associates in 1976 and became a registered Landscape Architect in 1978. He worked as Vice President and principal landscape architect from 1983 until semi-retirement in 2016. Dedicated to both his profession and his community, he served on numerous task forces, committees, and boards devoted to issues of quality of life and the natural environment. He offered his leadership as President of the NC Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1988 and served for ten years on the City of Raleigh Appearance Commission, two as Chair. He was a member of Raleigh Moravian Church, loved being a member of his Monday Night Bible Study, and enjoyed his time as a member of the Rotary Club of West Raleigh. While he was able, he was an avid golfer and an even more avid Wolfpack sports fan! To him, there was no finer way to fellowship than being in the company of a core group of “his guys” who began in a college what would become a lifelong friendship, whether they were tailgating together at every football game or planning their annual fall weekend retreat at Ocean Isle Beach. Gentle natured, gracious, and always quick with a smile or joke, he knew how to put people at ease. When prompted, his sense of nostalgia and a sharp memory made him an adept storyteller. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Betsy Allen Hood; and his children, David (Lauren) and Ben (Kate). Willie “Pop” also will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Lila and Charlie; and by his sister-in-law, Marty (Jim) Cook; nephew, Preston (Laura); and niece, Lesley Cook. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Raleigh Moravian Church, 1816 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607, with a reception to follow in Fellowship Hall. A private graveside service for the family at Bethabara’s God’s Acre in Winston-Salem will precede the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Piedmont Land Conservancy, noting Emily Allen Friendship Garden, P.O. Box 4025, Greensboro, NC 27404 or Rotary Club of West Raleigh, P.O. Box 12111, Raleigh, NC 27605. Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home , 300 Saint Mary's Street Raleigh, NC.
