Eunice Smith Ricks On Friday, August 22, 2014 at the age of 89, Eunice Virginia Smith Ricks, beloved wife of the late Sidney Franklin Ricks, Sr., passed away peacefully at the Belvoir Woods Healthcare Center in Alexandria, VA. Mrs. Ricks began her career as an educator in Manassas VA teaching business classes. She would go on to teach at Peninsula Business College in Newport News, and work at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. Mrs. Ricks worked for Hampton University for over 30 years. For the majority of that time she managed the Hampton University Bookstore. In retirement, she served for several years as the Board Chair for the Office of Human Affairs of Hampton Roads. Mrs. Ricks was born on December 19, 1924 in Worsham, VA (Prince Edward County). She was a graduate of Robert R. Moton High School, an undergraduate of her beloved St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, VA. - where she met and subsequently married the late Sidney Franklin Ricks, Sr. from Newport News, VA – and held a masters degree from Hampton Institute. Eunice leaves three children to cherish her memory: Laverne Ricks-Brown (Carlton), Sidney Franklin Ricks, Jr. (Deidre), and Edward Anthony Ricks Sr. There are five grandchildren: Kwame Brown (Kymani), Christina Ricks, Jamila Brown, Elizabeth Sullivan (Matt), and Edward Ricks Jr. She also leaves three great granddaughters: Ryan and Grier Sullivan and Yasmin Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Eunice was a devoted member of the St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 3pm at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church at 2515 Marshall Ave., Newport News VA 23607. Repast will immediately follow the funeral services in the church Parrish Hall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church.
