Demaine Funeral Home
Marion Rourke Achenbach, age 90, a resident of Springfield, Virginia, passed away on March 8, 2012. Marion was the daughter of Irish-American parents Joseph Rourke and Margaret Bowes Rourke. She grew up in Troy, New York with her parents and sister Elizabeth Rourke Sanford. Marion met her husband, Robert Achenbach, a student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, when he asked her to go dancing. They were married 62 years and raised three daughters: Kristine, Susan, and Barbara.
Bob’s aeronautical engineering career took the family all over the country. Marion was an active member in the many communities in which they lived, volunteering at local schools, hospitals, scouts, and the Catholic Church. She also worked for 20 years as a student loan officer, where she enjoyed interacting with college students. In retirement Marion and Bob traveled widely. She was a loving grandmother of four, though she rarely let her grandkids beat her in a card game. She will be greatly missed by her family and Greenspring retirement community friends.
Marion is survived by her three daughters, Kristine Marie Morrison (Samuel), Susan A. Denston and Barbara A. Spencer (Joseph); Sister, Elizabeth Sanford; four grandchildren, Bradley and Matthew Morrison; Robert and Katherine Spencer. A viewing is to be Thursday, March 15 at 9:30 at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road Springfield, VA 22151, 703-549-0074. The funeral will be at 11:30 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 7600 Old Keene Mill Road Springfield, VA 22151. Burial will follow at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Virginia.
