Obituary of Richard Edmond Bonin
Richard Edmond Bonin, 87, husband of Doris (Dodi) C. Lusignan Bonin, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 16, 2013. He was born Jan. 10, 1926 in Manchester, NH, son of the late Joseph and Albertina Bonin. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bonin was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Rose Bonin Anderson, his in-laws, Albert and Rose Lusignan, a sister, Pauline Towne, a brother, William Bonin, a brother-in-law, Charles Roy, and lifelong friends, Bob and Joan Gasparoli, and Bill Kilburn. Survivors include his bride of 63 years, a son, Richard Allen Bonin and his wife, Kim, of St. Louis, MO, a daughter, Judy Ann Bonin of Staunton, a son-in-law, Van C. Anderson of Waynesboro, a sister, Lorraine Keeley and her husband, Ed, of Connecticut, a sister-in-law, Claire Roy, of Massachusetts, two precious grandsons, Eric Russell Bonin, and Jeffrey Paul Bonin, of St. Louis, and special family friend, Mary Ann Hall, of Staunton. Mr. Bonin was an All-State running back at St. Joseph’s High School in Manchester. He was an aviator with the Naval Air Corp during WWII and later graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Richard married Dodi, his college sweetheart, on Sept. 17, 1949. He worked for General Electric in both Schenectady, NY and Roanoke, VA for 19 years and for American Safety Razor in Verona for 17 years, where he first served as General Manager. He was one of the founding members of a management-led buyout of American Safety Razor that occurred in 1977. Following that buyout, he became Vice President of Operations. After retirement in 1985, Mr. Bonin served for many years as Chairman of the Board of the area’s new hospital, Augusta Medical Center, now Augusta Health. He was also a member of the Board of Directors at Community Bank and at Specialty Blades, now Cadence, Inc., for several years. Mr. Bonin was a devoted Christian and member of Saint Francis Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer and pilot, a die-hard Redskin’s fan, and a true Conservative American Patriot who loved his country. Of greatest importance, he was the kindest and most loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 PM on Monday January 21, 2013 at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home in Staunton. A service will be conducted at Saint Francis Catholic Church on Tuesday January 22, 2013 at 1 PM. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Van Anderson, Dick Graham, Bruce Grover, Martin Lightsey, Mike Marrin, and Billy Sowers. Memorial contributions may be made to RID (Remove Intoxicated Drivers), St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Alzheimer’s Association, Wounded Warrior Project, Saint Francis Catholic Church, or a charity of your choice.
