Obituary of Craige David Southwick
Craige David Southwick of Terre Haute and formerly of Burlington and Glassboro, NJ and Towson, MD, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013. He was born on September 21, 1935 in Burlington, the only child of Horace Craige and Marion Frances (Coombs) Southwick. David attended the Church Farm School in Paoli, PA during his Jr. and Sr. high school years. During that time he was the crucifer in the Farm School Chapel. He graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Political Science. He received a Certificate of Teaching for grades 6 – 12 in New Jersey. David completed graduate work in Social Work and Business at Temple University in Philadelphia and the University of Maryland. He was a member and past president of Theta Phi Kappa at Rutgers. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard teaching Radio Communications. David worked as Program Director of the Towson YMCA for 6 years and was employed with CBS where he worked as Director of Human Resources until his retirement after 28 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir until recently. For many years, David was a Rotarian, member of the Elks, board member of the United Way, sponsor of church youth groups, Tri-Hi-Y and Y Teens sponsor, Little League baseball coach, Weeblos Boy Scout leader, Leader of Indian Guides Fathers and Sons, active participant in the Wabash Valley Personnel Association, member of the German Oberlandler Club and council president for several churches in NJ and Indiana. For over 20 years, he had been an operator and co-owner of Windswept Acres Antiques and Collectibles. He was an accomplished lecturer, historian and photographer, winning several prizes and awards. He was an amateur cartoonist and writer of Supernatural Happenings in New Jersey as well as composing hundreds of limericks. David is survived by his wife Martha of almost 53 years, his sons, Mark David and Sherri Southwick of Clinton, Keith Edward and Jennifer Southwick of Greenwood, Paul Eric Southwick of Terre Haute; daughter Dara Elayne and Corwin Moore of Westminster, MD; grandchildren, Jaren Southwick, Courtney Moore, Gretchen Southwick, Neeli Southwick, Hollan Southwick, Emirie Southwick, Brandon Southwick, Nathan Southwick; special family members, Rebecca Southwick, Kathy Lewis, Gina, Ahren, and Matthew Stanis, Julie, Daniel, Diego, Giovanni Farias, and Ruth, Kirsten, and Teghan Openlander. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and most recently his 20 year old grandson Corwin “Corey” Alan Moore II. Visitation will be from 9 until 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 on Saturday at the church with Rev. Dana Newhouse officiating. Private family burial with military rites performed by American Legion Post 104 will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Parke-Vermillion County Humane Society, P.O. Box 155, Clinton, IN 47842. David had been a volunteer for the shelter because of his love for animals.
