Penny Akens Creech

Penny Akens Creech, 92, a lifelong resident of the Terre Haute area, passed away on Saturday, July 28th, 2018 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Penny was born in Terre Haute to Mary Davis Grose and Joseph Grose on February 24, 1926. She is preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Lewis J. Akens, and by her second husband William J. Creech of Paris, IL. Penny was a 1943 graduate of Gerstmeyer Technical High School. She retired as supervisor at RH Donnelley after over 20 years, was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and Past President of the Terre Haute chapter. Penny enjoyed reading, travel, playing pinochle, and playing the slot machines. Penny is survived by a very large family who will greatly miss her spunk and her smile. Surviving are her three children: Curtis Michael Akens (Rantoul, IL), Penny Akens Carter (Asheville, NC), and Nancy Akens Flinn (Columbus, OH), step-children Richard Creech (Oklahoma City, OK), and Robert Creech (Paris, IL). In addition to her children she is survived by 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home on Thursday, August 2 from 4-7 PM. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Bob Roush of Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church, will begin at 10:30 AM on Friday, at the funeral home with interment to follow at the Highland Lawn Cemetery.
