Obituary of James "Jim" E. Hammer Jr.
James E. Hammer, Jr., age 85, died on October 14, 2013 at Augusta Health in Fisherville, Virginia. He was born March 2, 1928 in Churchville, Virginia. His parents were the late James E. Hammer Sr. and Mamie Armstrong Hammer. He was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, New Hope, Virginia and later of Wayne Hills Baptist Church, Waynesboro, Virginia. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950-1952. He retired from DuPont Co. in 1984 as a management supervisor after 38 years of service. In 1985, he was a liaison member between DuPont and Brown & Root Construction on an expansion project. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Fry Hammer, his infant granddaughter, Haley Hammer, and brother, Reverend Earl Hammer. Survivors include his wife, Lois Eberhard Hammer, son, Dr. Ron Hammer and wife Jill of California, daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Warren Koiner of Lyndhurst, Diane and Rick Roughgarden of Arizona, Mary Ann and Bill Gilmer of Blacksburg, a stepson, Rick Eberhard and his wife Cindy of Stuarts Draft. Also surviving are sisters, Geraldine Cook and husband Boyd of Swoope, Betty Davis of Arizona, Virginia Lee Murray of Waynesboro, sister-in-law, Peggy Hammer of Bridgewater, four grandchildren, James and Emily Koiner, Dory and Sarah Gilmer, two step-grandchildren, Candice Eberhard Bartley and Derek Eberhard, seven great step-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home in Waynesboro, Virginia at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 17 officiated by Reverend Danny Campbell and Ernest Avery assisted by Jim’s close friend, Jim Puffenbarger. Visitation by family and friends will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the memorial service. A private family burial service will be held following the memorial service at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 86, New Hope, VA 24469.
